In addition to frequent vacuuming, it’s important to clean your carpet on a regular basis. Cleaning systems will remove the oily, sticky soil that vacuums can’t take out, and will help keep your carpet looking great over time.

Carpet CleaningHow to clean carpet:

  • Preventative Maintenance – walk-off mats placed at doorways prevent a majority of staining and soiling.
  • Spot and Spill Removal – prompt attention to spills will prevent a stain from setting.
  • Vacuuming – the most important step in caring for your carpet is vacuuming it thoroughly and frequently.
  • Hot water extraction or steam cleaning – removes oils and particulates that accelerate soiling. We recommends hot water extracting every 12-18 months depending on the traffic in your home.

What is hot water extraction?

Hot water extraction targets the soil that results from air pollution cooking vapors and tracked-in dirt which can cause gradual but significant dulling of colors over time. The color isn’t lost, but is hidden under the film. If this type of soil is allowed to accumulate, it begins to attract and hold the dry soil.

The process consists of applying a cleaning agent into the carpet pile and using water in the extractor to recover the used solution and soil. This can be done from a truck-mounted unit outside the home with only the hose and wand brought inside or by a portable system brought into the home. This system is commonly referred to as “steam cleaning,” although no steam is actually generated. Whether you choose to hire a professional or do it yourself, make sure the machine used has the CRI Seal of Approval.

Get on a cleaning schedule

Carpet in a typical household should be cleaned every 12 to 18 months, depending on the number of residents and amount of activity. If carpet is cleaned before it becomes too unsightly, the cleaning chore will be easier and more successful. Contact us at 231-947-6900 for more information.

Carpet Preventative Maintenance: Simple and proactive steps will keep your carpet looking good over time. Don’t track dirt inside, Use a quality carpet pad, and more.

Carpet Preventative MaintenanceDon’t track dirt inside

Placing walk-off mats outside all entrances will help absorb soil and moisture and trap excessive dirt, sand or oil that might otherwise be tracked into the home. Clean mats on a regular basis so they don’t become sources of soil themselves.

Use quality carpet cushion

A good carpet cushion, or pad, not only gives better resilience and comfort underfoot, it can extend the life of your carpet – especially on stairs.

Occasionally move heavy furniture

Moving your furniture on occasion refreshes the feel of your room and helps avoid excessive pile crushing. Consider using carpet protectors under the legs of tables, chairs and other furniture to help distribute the weight. Damage can occur if you use chairs or appliances with rollers or casters without a chair pad designed specifically for carpet.

Protect carpet when moving furniture

When moving heavy wheeled furniture (pianos, buffets, etc.), prevent damage by placing a protective barrier of heavy cardboard or plywood between the wheels and the carpet.

Clean your area rugs

If you use area rugs on your carpet, be sure to clean them regularly, and make sure you clean and restore the pile of the carpet underneath as well. After cleaning your carpet, allow it to dry completely before replacing rugs.

Reduce periods of direct sunlight

Protect your carpet from prolonged periods of direct sunlight with blinds, shades or awnings.

Use Floors Carpet Cleaner

Specially formulated Carpet Cleaner is ideal for stain and spot removal to keep your floors looking great. Clean never felt so good.

CORETec FlooringCOREtec Flooring  is not only beautiful, but it is also highly durable and waterproof. It only takes a few simple care and maintenance steps to keep your floor looking beautiful for years, and make the most affordable type of flooring.

Routine Maintenance

  • Dust, sweep or vacuum the floor regularly to prevent any buildup of dirt or gritty substances that can scratch or dull the floor. If you do vacuum, do not use on with a beater brush, they can cause damage to the floor.
  • Any spills should be cleaned up immediately with a damp mop or cloth.
  • Mop or machine clean using 175-rpm “Swing-arm” machine or auto scrubber with a 3M 5100 Red pad (or equal).
  • Occasionally clean the floor with a resilient floor cleaner.

Preventive Care of COREtec Flooring

  • Protective mats. Place mats outside of all entrances and exits, and make sure to clean them on a regular basis. They will absorb soil and moisture and trap excessive dirt, sand, grit, oil, asphalt, or driveway sealer that would otherwise be tracked inside. Mats that are 100% latex-backed should be used. Do not use mats with rubber backing, as they can discolor the flooring.
  • Appliances. Be aware that refrigerators, ranges or other heat-producing appliances, or hot air registers that produce heat over 120°F, can burn, fade or discolor your floor. Any hot objects, such as matches or cigarettes, can also burn and damage your COREtec floor.
  • Furniture legs. All the legs should have large surface floor protectors that are non-staining. Use flat, smooth glides to replace dome shaped, small, or narrow metal glides. To keep from scratching the floor, these glides should have self-adhesive felt pads. They also need to be checked regularly for wear and dirt and then replaced when needed.
  • Heavy appliances/furniture. Any appliance or piece of furniture that is heavy and rarely moved should have flat furniture cups or casters that are non-staining and of appropriate size. The available sizes are round, 1 3/8” to 1 5/8”, and square, 1 ½” to 2 5/8”.
  • Moveable appliances/furniture. Mobile appliances should have casters that swivel easily. These casters should have a diameter of 2” and ¾” hard rubber treads that are non-staining. Ball shaped casters should not be used.
  • Be careful of your feet. Avoid wearing stiletto-style heels, cleats, or spiked golf shoes on your flooring. They may cause scratches and indentations.
  • Sunlight protection. Keep window coverings closed during the times of day when there’s heavy sunlight. COREtec floors can fade or get discolored if overexposed to the sun.

Is Porcelain Ceramic Tile A Better Flooring Choice

If you are thinking about redesigning an office space or a room in your home, try considering porcelain tiles. Porcelain tile flooring offers an almost unlimited amount of various colors, shapes, and sizes that can be used together to create an amazing, unique and beautiful design. Porcelain tile is made with the highest quality clay and is denser and water resistant than ceramic tiles. They create beautiful floors for much less than the cost of stone. Below are some of the benefits of porcelain tile flooring:

Durability

Porcelain is some of the toughest flooring available. It is hard, thick, and very solid. Due to its strong characteristics, porcelain is resistant to heavy impact and can be used both in residential and commercial environments. This type of flooring is equipped to handle high traffic areas.

Fire Resistant

Porcelain tiles are manufactured at a very high temperature and hence the reason why porcelain tiles are fireproof. They won’t burn, produce smoke or any toxic fumes. They are fire resistant.

Moisture Resistant

Porcelain tiles are what is often referred to as “moisture resistant.” As you might imagine, this means that they are impervious to moisture, which means that they aren’t likely to get easily damaged simply by being in bathrooms or wet rooms. Porcelain tile has a less than 0.5% moisture absorption rate.

Stain Resistant

Another great benefit of porcelain flooring is that it is naturally stain resistant. Porcelain is able to repel liquid penetration, so staining agents aren’t able to soak into the material. Once porcelain is glazed this effect is even more dramatic.

Stylish Design

Porcelain is offered in many different colors and textures. The design options are endless. Many companies are recreating natural surfaces, such as wood grain and marble patterns.

Cost Effective

Porcelain tile generally costs less than other tile options. Though this material may cost less, there are various textures and patterns to choose from. This type of flooring is cost effective. Though it may be more costly to install than other hard surfaces its limited upkeep and maintenance adds to its value over time.

Low Maintenance

Porcelain tile material is tough, and simple to maintain. It does not require any special sealing to keep out water as other materials do. Water can be wiped right off of this material and won’t cause any damage. Typically porcelain is used in kitchens, bathrooms, entryways, and mudrooms where moisture is most common but can be used for your entire office or home like living rooms, bedrooms, etc.

Porcelain Tile flooring is a great choice for almost any room within a home or office due to its warm, comforting and quiet qualities. To discuss your flooring needs and service call us today

How To Keep Your Floors Clean In Winter

Winter is a time when we like to keep our homes warm and protect ourselves from the elements. But it’s also a time when we need to think about protecting our floors like carpets, hardwood floors etc. Rain, snow, dirt and salt can be a lethal combination that can create damage to floors, which is why it’s important to take certain preventative steps before and during the cold, winter months.

Always have thick outside mats at every entry points

It is important to remove excess water, snow, dirt and salt from the shoes before entering your home. And the obvious place to start is outside. Place a sturdy, robust mat at every entrance, as they will provide the first layer of protection for the flooring inside. A thick, absorbent mat will trap the worst of moisture, dirt, salt and mildew before it is brought inside.

Place thick welcome mats or doormats inside the house too

No matter how well your family members and guests wipe their feet before they enter your home, bringing some moisture, dirt and salt into your home will sometimes be unavoidable. It is therefore a good idea to place welcome mats or doormats at every exterior door including the front door, garage door and patio. Place a shoe rack or some type of shoe stand near each mat, so people are never forced to walk over your floors with dirty shoes on. And don’t allow damp mats to fester inside your home, as they will start to smell and potentially causing more problems than they solve.

Invest in a rubber mat for drying

Investing in a large rubber mat with sides and raised treads inside the mat is a good way to prevent causing puddles that come from melted snow of  boots and shoes. The shoes should go on these mats until they are dry. If the mats come with raised sides, it’s even better as these sides will contain the melted snow from spreading and you can even put a towel inside these mat for easy cleaning. Once the shoes are dry, you can bring them inside or place them in shoe closets or shoe racks.

Consider your pets specially dogs

Dogs can bring in snow, mud and dirt from outside, so put dog booties on their paws which not only protects them from elements and keeps them warm but also protects your floors. Wipe your dog’s feet before bringing them in. Clean your floors immediately when your dog’s paws leave a mark.

Always vacuum hardwood floors before mopping

If you notice mud, dirt or salt on your hardwood floors, you will probably would think of mopping. However, mopping over dirt or salt from snow could grind particles into the wood and cause permanent damage. If you see snow, water and dirt onto your wood floor, wait for it to dry, vacuum the area first before you start to clean with a mop.

Protect the finish of your hardwood floors

Hardwood floors are treated with special sealants and resins to protect them from scratching and water damage. But the salts used for melting snow and ice can wear away these coatings leaving the wood underneath vulnerable to damage. A mild solution of water and vinegar can be used to neutralize the alkalinity of melting salts and stop the damage of hardwood protective coatings before it starts. We always recommend that you should check with your floor’s manufacturer before applying any treatments.

Through a proper combination of prevention and maintenance, your carpets and hardwood floors will last long and protected in winters.
