Carpet Installation
Installing Carpet – Before & After

Carpet Installation at Eastmark Construction

Before Installation of a Carpet

Since carpet installation is a skill that is developed through years of experience, using professional installers is the best way to go. Making sure you understand the basics of carpet installation will help build up your knowledge of the process and increase your confidence in the professionals working in your home. Here are the basics:

  • Seams are unavoidable, but professionals excel at minimizing and hiding seams. They have years of experience and the most reliable methods.
  • Certain carpet styles can show more seam tape placement than others. This is called seam peaking, and is especially noticeable in looped and low cut pile carpets. A seam may be exceptional and considered ‘tight’ but is still visible.
  • Keep in mind that, sometimes, extra carpet needs to be ordered to better match patterns at the seams, which will add to the cost when transitioning to other flooring products. Our experienced installers will try to match the surface heights to minimize transitions.

Before installation day

  •  Furniture is the first step. All furniture and other objects need to be removed from the areas to be carpeted. Our installers will remove your furniture, but there may be an additional charge. If we do remove your furniture, you will need to empty any contents of the furniture. We also do not disconnect or reconnect electronics such as TVs, computers, etc.
  •  If you prefer to remove your current flooring, please do this at least one day prior to installation to allow time for cleanup and floor preparation. If removing old carpet, leave tack strips in place and pull the staples out of the floor from the original pad.
  •  Have a plan for your doors. It is very possible that the interior doors the carpet is installed under may not swing freely because of the new carpet’s thickness. Some installers will remove the doors to install the carpet and then, if possible, rehang them after the installation is complete. If the doors do not clear the new carpet after the installation, you may need to arrange for a qualified carpenter to cut down the doors.
  • Trim Options. Paint on walls, baseboards and woodwork may need touch-ups after installation. If this is happens, it is your responsibility.
  • Make sure your clean-up plan is clearly discussed with installers. New carpet installation will produce waste. If material is available, your installer will leave you with any sizable scraps for any future repairs. These materials are usually collected by your installer and left at your trash site. Check with your retailer before the day of installation so you’re clear about the clean-up, if there are added costs to do so, and ask about the plan for carpet remnants.

It’s not hard to take care of carpet – there are just a few easy steps to be aware of. Regularly following these steps will ensure that your carpet continues to look as lovely in years to come as it does when you have it installed.

Preventive Maintenance

Proactive steps to easily keep your carpet looking good over time:

  • Place mats outside of all entrances and clean them on a regular basis. They will absorb soil and moisture and trap excessive dirt, sand, grit, oil, asphalt, or driveway sealer that would otherwise be tracked inside.
  • Protect your carpet from prolonged periods of direct sunlight with window coverings (shades, blinds, curtains, awnings, etc.)
  • Use a quality pad underneath your carpet. Good carpet pads not only give better resilience and comfort, they can increase the lifespan of your carpet, especially on stairs. Look into the many varieties of carpet pads, and remember that some carpets carry warranties with particular density and thickness requirements. Make sure to review your warranty before purchasing your pad.
  • When using area rugs on your carpet, be sure to clean them regularly. Also, make sure to restore and clean the carpet underneath as well. Always check area rugs for colorfastness before placing them on carpet because the color in some rugs may bleed through. After cleaning your carpet, allow it to dry completely before replacing rugs.
  • Make sure to protect your carpet when moving furniture. When moving heavy wheeled furniture (buffets, pianos, etc.), prevent damage by placing heavy cardboard or plywood between the wheels and the carpet.
  • You should also occasionally move heavy furniture. It won’t just revitalize the feel of your room, it will also help prevent excessive crushing. It’s a good idea to use carpet protectors under the legs of chairs, tables, and other furniture to help distribute the weight. If you use chairs or appliances with rollers or casters without a chair pad designed specifically for carpet, it can cause damage to your carpet as well.
  • Choosing the right vacuum. Routine vacuuming can actually extend your carpet’s life, the type of vacuum cleaner you choose is important. A vacuum’s performance varies based on the carpet’s construction and fiber type. A good vacuum should have features that allow you to adjust the height, fan speed, and beater bar rotation. Vacuums that are self-propelled, have large wheels and specialty tools can also help ensure effortless and effective carpet maintenance.

Beauty and Style:
There is an abundance of carpet styles and colors to choose from. This will allow you to personalize living space. Carpet can be used as a foundation or can be incorporated to make a statement by selecting patterns, texture, and color.

Warmth and Comfort:
Carpet can retain warm air longer than other flooring materials, literally creating warmth in your living space. This material also creates a comfortable place to sit, or play and gives a room an overall feeling of warmth and comfort.

Softens Falls:
Carpet is ideal for cushioning our footsteps, reducing slips and falls and minimizes potential injuries if a fall were to occur. This can appeal to families with young children or to older individuals.

Noise Reducer:
In the modern home, TVs, computers and sound systems can give the impression of home being a noisy place. Carpet helps to absorb sound, and the addition of a cushioned pad will reduce noise even more. Carpet also works as a sound barrier between upper and lower floor levels. Adding carpet to a flight of stairs may help mask the sound of foot traffic as well.

Health Advantages:
Carpet traps allergens and other toxins. In a home that requires disposal of these items, carpet allows for this to happen.

Easy Maintenance:
Other materials can be more labor intensive to clean than carpet. Therefore, to keep carpet clean it can cost less to maintain.
